Complicated, unhurried, amusing, intriguing and memorable. That’s former President of the United States George W Bush – but also a good description of this Oliver Stone-directed bio-pic of the man.
|
W is set between 2002 and 2004 when President Bush (Josh Brolin, No Country for Old Men, Milk) is on the verge of invading Iraq. As he sits around the conference table, umming, aahing and occasionally shooting back some twisted rhyme that’s supposed to sound like something significant, Bush’s people – Dick Cheney (an excellent Richard Dreyfuss), Colin Powell (Jeffrey Wright), Condoleezza Rice (Thandie Newton), Donald Rumsfeld (Scott Glenn) and Karl Rove (Toby Jones) – make all the decisions for him. As all this is going on, we flashback to Bush’s younger years, including his freshman year at college, his first meeting with wife-to-be Laura (Elizabeth Banks), his clashes with his strict but seemingly much more level-headed father George Sr (James Cromwell), and his run for the governorship of Texas.
Brolin, though not a dead ringer for the ex-president, gives a remarkable performance as a man many loved to hate.
W is another excellent picture from the always dependable Oliver Stone, in what is his third foray into presidential flicks after JFK and Nixon.
