In it, the ageing action hero plays an exaggerated version of himself, a down-on-his-luck action movie star who, sick of losing roles to Steven Seagal, returns home to Belgium to sulk… and to hide from the tax department, who are chasing him for unpaid taxes.
Upon return to his home country, Jean-Claude stops by the bank, only to discover that it’s in the process of being robbed. Surely, if anyone can stop the criminals, it’s action movie star Jean-Claude Van Damme, right? Right?!
Largely filmed in French, JCVD is powerful, action-packed, thrilling and even funny. It’s easily the best film Van Damme (TimeCop, The Hard Corps) has done in recent years – and he’s absolutely brilliant in it. We knew he could kick, but who knew he could act?!
