In the beginning, the rules were simple. There weren't any.
"When we think of George Clooney, our thoughts usually turn to a man who’s a smooth, affable, classic Cary Grant-like actor. We often forget that he has many strings to his bow, one of many being directing films. His debut feature as director, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, the supposed story of Chuck Barris, the host of the infamous ’70s TV affair The Gong Show, showed George had talent on both sides of the lens. When he wrote, directed and also starred in the captivating true story of two TV newsmen’s efforts to confront McCarthyism in the communist-fearing US 1950s, Good Night, and Good Luck, we knew his debut effort was no fluke. The Academy agreed, giving the flick six Oscar nominations. Leatherheads sees George parking his behind in the director’s chair once again – well, in-between bouts of appearing on-screen – and he’s getting pretty darned swell at this whole directorial caper! Set in the world of 1920s American football, Leatherheads tells of Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly (Clooney), the captain of a struggling pro football team. Back then, it was college football that pulled the crowds. So, with the pro game facing extinction, Dodge has a brainwave – why not recruit a college star to help reinvigorate interest in his league? He manages to woo the biggest college football name in the land, Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski, the US version of The Office). Not only is he pretty handy with a ball, he’s also a war hero, the story going that he singlehandedly captured a platoon of German soldiers in WWI. While Dodge’s plan works, a fly lands in the ointment in the form of hardnosed newspaper reporter Lexie Littleton (Renee Zellweger). Not only is she after the inside story on what really happened in the trenches, she becomes one of the three pointy bits in a love triangle of epic proportions, as Dodge and Carter both fall for her brash, smoky charms. A romantic comedy in the style of the classics where the leads were worthy adversaries until that final realisation that golly, they really adore each other, Leatherheads is a hoot from start to finish, and the sort of rom-com that guys and gals alike will all get loads of enjoyment from.
