In layman’s terms, Sean decides to mount a one-man liberation of gay Paree, and to show ‘ze Germans’ how they ‘say goodbye in Ireland’ (read: large caliber bullets, explosions and the odd ‘Irish kiss’ nighty-night).
Forged by the folks who brought us the actiontastic Mercenaries series, The Saboteur is an open world, sandbox adventure with a touch of Schindler's List to it. The Kraut-controlled sections of the city are cast in an eerie monochrome, until you liberate them back to technicolour life with your daring deeds. It’s GTA IV meets De Blob, and the bold visual design results in an almost hypnotic sense of progression and achievement.
Couple this mesmerising mechanic with some of the finest sandbox gunplay, racing and fisticuffs we’ve seen in a long time and The Saboteur is an absolute pot of gold. Most missions subscribe to the ‘quiet in, loud out’ approach – you’ll tempt the gods of vertigo by climbing across rooftops and sneaking in for stealth kills to infiltrate a Nazi stronghold. Then you get your sabotage on with high-powered explosives. Once the schnitzel hits the fan, you’ll have to rely on an intuitive cover system and an assortment of weapons to blast your way back to the underground.
The Saboteur represents the first marriage between WWII and the sandbox genre, and it’s an absolute match made in heaven.
