James Cameron's Avatar: The Game [ M ]

Release:  01/Jan/0001

Platform:  PS3, XBOX 360, WII, DS

Rating:  M

Genre:  Action Adventure

Perhaps we should explain. Humans have discovered the mineral rich planet of Pandora and hope to bleed it dry. The problem is, the atmosphere kills humans, and the 10-foot tall, blue-skinned natives (the Na’vi)… well, they sort of kill humans too. Not the best tourist destination, Pandora.

Cue an epic space marine invasion of the planet and the human creation of the titular ‘avatars’ (think infiltration units comprised of Na’vi clones who are actually controlled via humans in Matrix-esque computers). Are you still with us? OK good, because here’s where things get really interesting.

Letting you fight for either cause, Human or Na’vi, Avatar: The Game truly is a third-person action extravaganza. Players have access to more than 60 weapons and vehicles, and each faction does warfare very differently. The Na’vi use Ewok-style weapons, ninja athleticism and ride fearsome beasts, whilst the marines get flamethrowers, drop ships and bad language. As you might imagine, when you factor all this into the competitive online multiplayer, things can get more than a little crazy.

Speaking of experiences of an insane nature, if you’re rocking the PS3/360 version on a TV that supports HDMI output and a 120Hz, you can play Avatar: The Game with 3D glasses and have it make sweet love to your eyeballs. Seriously, it is an effect that has to be seen to be believed. The depth of field you get when creeping through a predator-filled jungle is second to none. It’s next, next-gen, people!
#1 Whip It
Drew Barrymore's directorial debut is a classic coming-of-age story... on roller skates. No, it's not back to Xanadu, but into the high-impact world of girls' roller derby, where Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) finds herself transformed into Babe Ruthless.
