Why face off against two-legged thugs when one can take on two-legged velociraptors and huge T-Rexes? That’s the thinking behind the Turok series, which started back on the Nintendo 64. While this upcoming next-gen version will again be a first-person shooter, it will feature some formula-snapping innovations that set it apart from the usual genre bottleneck.
The story sees lead dino-killer Joseph Turok join a team of crack commandoes as they crash-land on a planet riddled with genetically altered dinosaurs under the control of Turok’s ex-mentor, Roland Kane. Mr Kane has gone rotten and requires a right tar-and-feathering from his ex-student.
Turok will first and foremost place gamers in the role of Jurassic Park attacker and raider, as apart from the usual mob of goons that require dispatching, the game will show off over 20 varieties of dinosaur all gagging for bullet therapy. The usual raptors will be abundant, but there’ll also be the monstrous dilophosaurus, the small but gnarly echidons and the hippo-esque hadrosaurs all waiting to be fossilised. Turok is also out to give players a bunch of combat options, notably the ability to guide any nearby unprejudiced dinosaurs into attacking other foes – like Kane’s Gestapo.
As always, you’ll have quite an arsenal. Apart from the flare gun, a flamethrower with a secondary grenade launcher and a shotgun that can tear apart a T-Rex in moments, Turok will also feature a P23 combat knife designed for stealth kills.
When players finish blasting their way through the single player game’s hoarde of beasts and henchmen they’ll be able to take on up to 15 friends in a variety of online slaughter matches. |
