A matter of trust
 |
As Duplicity is indicative of a certain kind of glamour from films of the past, director Tony Gilroy insisted on having a glamorous movie star at its centre – and when it comes to movie stars, you can’t get any bigger than Julia Roberts! |
A fast, fun thrill ride that’ll keep you guessing throughout, Duplicity stars Hollywood superstars Roberts and Clive Owen as spies turned corporate operatives in the midst of a stealthy love affair. When the pair find themselves on opposite sides of a corporate conflict, they each have to decide how much they’re willing to trust the one they love.
Having taken a few years off to have children, only occasionally popping up in the odd ensemble piece (such as Charlie Wilson’s War and Ocean’s Thirteen), Duplicity marks Roberts’ highly-anticipated return to leading roles. The actress says that what initially intrigued her about the film was the chance to reunite with her Closer co-star Clive Owen on screen.
“If we can do a movie like Closer and do those more difficult scenes together and still be friends I think we deserve to be able to revisit that professional relationship with a bit more fun dialogue,” Roberts says of Mike Nichols’ confronting 2004 drama.
“Clive is the ultimate leading man,” Roberts, who has worked with her fair share of charming leading men, including Kiefer Sutherland, Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks, adds. “He’s great in this part, and I love when he plays like he’s at a loss. His earnest qualities are so truthful, and I loved acting with him, every minute of it. He comes in really prepared and is able to enjoy the process. We have that same goal; to do a great job and to have such a good time.”
Sometimes, they had too good a time on set.
“We laughed a lot,” smiles Roberts. “When we were shooting we were always being so silly, almost to the point of Tony [Gilroy, director] being annoyed with us because we wouldn’t get serious and be our serious selves in the movie.”
Roberts, who hit the big time nearly 20 years ago playing Vivian Ward, a hooker with a heart of gold, in the smash-hit Pretty Woman, loved playing the role of a mysterious superspy.
“I was really flattered to be asked to play Claire, because she’s not altogether likeable or trustworthy,” says Roberts, said to have been paid a whopping $15 million for appearing in the film. “But when all is said and done, she wears her heart on her sleeve in a way that was quite interesting to me. I thought it was great to play somebody who is a little more convoluted than your normal onscreen woman.”

Drew Barrymore's directorial debut is a classic coming-of-age story... on roller skates. No, it's not back to Xanadu, but into the high-impact world of girls' roller derby, where Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) finds herself transformed into Babe Ruthless. |
